How do I clear a check engine light on 2000 Hyundai elantra?

My girlfriend has a 2000 hyundai elantra with a check engine light on and whats me to check under the hood. I told her on the phone, she might have to take the car to the dealer and have them see whats wrong. She had a oil change not to long ago at a Merchants tire shop.|||You should change the oxygen sensor, that is most likely your problem. The guy above is stupid it takes $15 per sensor, with comections. One wrench and 10 minutes and it will be fixed. Don't waist your money at a shop for this one.|||Very unlikely this will help, but if you unplug the battery and plug it back in, it may reset the computer and turn the light off, but if the car is still having a problem the light will come back on. Sometimes the light will come on even if the car just had a glitch, but normally will not shut off on its own|||IF it is infact an oxygen sensor, depending on the vehicle it could be expensive. Fifteen dollars is a little cheap if you ask me. We changed the O2 sensor in my old cavalier and it cost upwards of 100 dollars just for the sensor. If the car is still under warranty, take it to the dealership. They will know what's going on. When the check engine light comes on, the car's computer sets codes that they can read. Each code means a different thing. it is very unlikely that the dealership will NOT know what the code is for. If you are not under warranty, go to Auto Zone or wherever and have them plug their computer into your car and tell you the code. be careful with them though because they can be very vague about telling you what's going on. If all else fails and your state doesn't require that the c/e light be off to be inspected and the car seems to be running fine, honestly, i wouldn't worry about it. My old car had over 45+ thousand miles put on it with the check engine light on when i sold it and it is still on to this day with 200K+ on it with the new owner. Good luck!|||Just a month ago my engine light was on.So I took it to the dealership.they told me it could be anything. everything it the elantra has a sensor on it. I have a 2005 elantra and they just said it could be the weight in the car etc. for example , I'm always at my dealership. people buy new cars and the next day they're car won't start. don't worry your problem is minor.|||The check engine light is directly related to the emissions. Therefore if it is on, its because one of the sensors suggests theres something wrong. A common (and easy to fix) problem is if the gas cap is not fully closed. The car can tell if gas vapor is leaking out there. However the more common problem with that is typically with the oxygen sensor. But I'll get to that in a second.

To answer your question: Autozone offers the service to plug your car into their computer for free to diagnose what the problem is. Its a great way for them to sell you the parts to maintain your car. They can also clear the computer. (Or you can disconnect your battery overnight).

After the computer has been reset - you'll need to drive for a full typical day - which is about 15 minutes at 30 mph, 15 minutes at 50 mph or higher, and some stop and go in there as well. This will allow the computer to run through all its tests. If it comes back on then there is a problem.

The most common problem when the light comes on is the oxygen sensor. Its embedded in the exhaust system - as such subject to very high heat. Most newer cars are equipped with at least two. One before the catalytic convertor and one after. They send messages to the computer which compares them to see if the catalyic convertor is working properly. It almost always is. The oxygen sensor is probably whats broken. They're an easy fix if you've got the tools, however to know which one to replace is a challange. Something like that can be repaired at any shop or the dealer. Shouldn't cost too much.|||i have the same problem with my 2001 hyundia elantra, auto zone tests says its a vaccum leak but i don't know where to look maybe the pcv valve located by valve cover or the o2 sensors located by the cat. converter. ps i hope this helps|||I have a Hyundai Tiburon, and was just told at Auto Zone that the check engine light was on because of a small leak from the gas cap. If you've just gotten gas, and not turned the cap on tightly enough sometimes it will come on. I replaced the cap, and have reset computer by unhitching the battery, but light still comes on, so hope yours is an easy answer. Good Luck!|||you might want to ask your gf to have the car diagnosed. it might be a oxygen sensor, it could be an emission problem, it could be a lot of different things. just have a mechanic diagnose it with a diagnostic tool so that you can determine what the problem is.|||Take out battery at night.

At morning put it in again and the light will be gone, but if it will turn on again it means that you need to fix car.

P.S.

Check your engine, after battery staff.|||If there are no instructions in your Sweetie's owners manual or if she does not have an owners manual, Have her ask at the service department of a dealer. They have a tool to diagnose the problem. They also can tell you how the warning light can be cleared/reset (most likely with out disconnecting the battery).

The answers you have received already tell you the most likely causes of the light aluminating but they do not address your question directly. Let me add: It is not a good idea to clear the indicator without finding the cause of its activation. Also, I am not a fan of just changing parts until the problem is solved. That can be a very time consuming and expensive process.|||Well I had a Hyundi once and it was fine the CHECK ENGINE light always stayed on though! So Hard telling.|||wow|||Take the bulb out
